Fliegerhorst

Main Gate

The airfield had its start in the 1920s as a sports club for light planes and gliders.
The Luftwaffe took over in 1935. They extended it by carving it out of the Jever forrest and buiding hangars, a hospital, barracks and an underground fuel dump.
In 1939 the ME 109s and 110s were withdrawn from Jever and replaced by Ju 188 night fighters.
It was still a grass field and was not bombed or even found by the RAF.
Between 1945 and 1951 the airfield was garrisoned by Poles, Canadians, Danes and Jewish Immigrants.
The RAF took over in 1951 and completely refurbished the base. They pulled out in 1961 and handed it over to the Luftwaffe.
